“Be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only”  James 1:22

The chatter of excited anticipation filled the air at Christ Church Gabriola, as a dozen card tables were draped in red, rose, and pink tablecloths and overlaid with traditional tea-party white.  Lacy napkins and delicate silver spoons were carefully positioned next to fresh floral nosegays and fine bone china plates and tea cups, ensuring room for the steaming pots of tea, dainty cucumber sandwiches, freshly baked scones complete with whipped cream and  jams, and assorted baked delicacies that were soon to follow.  This nostalgic recreation of the traditional community tea party of times gone by was lovingly assembled in honour of two stalwart pillars of our Gabriola and GES community, Eric and Sue Boulton.

Lynette Jackson welcomed the packed room of guests on behalf of the Gabriola Ecumenical Society, and gave voice to our collective thanks to Sue and Eric for their countless contributions to our lives, while Anne Sims offered a thoughtful grace describing the Boultons’ decades of selfless community service. Together we enjoyed a sumptuous mid-day feast interspersed with expressions of caring and appreciation for Eric and Sue. Jake Galbraith contributed a heartfelt musical salute to farming life, including Eric and Sue’s favorite Stan Rogers in the mix, and Leah Hokanson soon had us all singing an impromptu round together expressing our collective love and support.  The presentation to Sue of a bouquet of two dozen long-stemmed roses, together with a basket of written tributes to be added to a forthcoming scrapbook of personal tributes and photos  rounded out the afternoon.

Special thanks to the organizing committee of Imelda Cuthbertson, Del McCarthy, Anniken DeLissa, Jinny Hayes, Catherine Woodward and Lynette Jackson; to Anne Sims for the delicious scones and Jennie Shillingford for the cucumber sandwiches; to Betty Schultze for keeping the kitchen in order while brewing countless pots of tea; to  Jake Galbraith and Leah Hokanson for the delightful songs; to Deb Trca and Colleen McCarthy for set-up and take-down support; To Lisa Millard for her unwavering behind-the-scenes support for this and every GES event; and for all who contributed baking, good cheer, and genuine thanksgiving to this sweet celebration — all much appreciated.

Eric and Sue, we love you!
