In our society, death is a subject easily placed on a shelf. Yet we all have to face the raw emotions surrounding the death of family members, friends and people we know.
November is a month which seems to be especially set aside as a time of remembrance. In Mexico the Day of the Dead is celebrated in a public way to honour the deceased. The Christian calendar has the Feast Days of All Souls and All Saints. On November 11th we gather to honour the military personnel who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace for all.
In the spirit of honouring and remembering, the Gabriola Ecumenical Society will be presenting a program called Loving Presence During Tough Times on Sunday afternoon, November 13th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Netloft, 1960 Murray Road. Donations appreciated.
There will be a ceremony of remembrance, music and presentations by five or more speakers. The presentations will not be long. They will be about a moment in the tough times the presenters’ experienced. It will be like hearing the story behind a photo from someone’s photo album.
A daughter will speak about how she came to realize the privilege it was to care for her dying father. A husband’s felt presence, at times, brings back memories for a wife of their long, loving relationship. A son talks about a moment in his mother’s last days in hospice that spoke volumes about who she was. A Gabriola author shares a story from a book she and her mother wrote on palliative care; she recalls difficult conversations with a dying sister. Painting was a way an artist realized form changes, but love remains and helped her to see the relationship between love and death.
Fires of Transformation…and the greatest of these is Love, is the theme for the 2016-17 Gabriola Ecumenical Society’s programs. Come and hear how, despite tough times, love threads its way through the stories of the presenters.
