Reverend Dr. Karen (Kestrel) Arends has followed a life path that intertwines scientific and spiritual inquiry. After graduating from the University of Alberta with a PhD in theoretical chemistry, she served as an atmospheric scientist with Environment Canada, focused on pressing environmental challenges such as acid rain, ozone depletion, and long-range transport of air pollution. Leaving government research in 2000, Kes embarked on a career at Concordia University of Edmonton, serving as professor of public health and then as Dean of Graduate Studies until retiring from academics in 2016.
Kestrel is a certified Life-Cycle Celebrant, with a specialization in ceremonies across the life cycle, encompassing weddings and funerals, healings and transitions. She has served as an ordained minister with the Canadian International Metaphysical Ministry since 2017. Kes offers inclusive, eclectic, and meaningful life-cycle ceremonial experiences, sharing the beauty of ritual to mindfully honour life’s milestones. Her offerings reflect her love of ceremony, the changing seasons, the primal elements, the Goddess in all of us, and profound love of Mother Earth.
